Pests
A pest is any organism that damages or interferes with desirable plants in fields, orchards, and landscapes; or that harms animals or humans. Some of these organisms transmit diseases. Others are simply unwelcome because of their numbers, or the nuisance they cause. Pests may be weed plants, vertebrates like birds and rodents, invertebrates (insects, mites, snails), pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi), or anything else that disrupts the natural balance of an area.
Monitoring is the key to understanding and controlling pests. Finding out what pests are present, how many there are, and the extent of the damage they are causing allows you to decide whether action is needed.
Controlling a pest usually involves prevention, suppression, or eradication. Prevention is the best goal, but this is often not possible for outdoor pests, because of natural forces that affect populations. These include climate, natural enemies, barriers, availability of food and water, and pheromones. In enclosed environments, such as homes and buildings, the goals of pest control are more easily achieved.
Weeds
Weeds are unwanted plants that grow where they are not wanted and interfere with the growth of desired crops. They compete with crop plants for water, space, sunlight and nutrients. Weeds also tend to reproduce in a number of different ways including: by seed, runners and rhizomes. Many weeds are invasive, meaning they do not belong in the area in which they grow. Examples include kudzu (Pueraria thunbergiana), which spreads rapidly and can choke out other vegetation in southeastern US forests.
Other weeds are harmful to humans or animals. They may cause poisoning, as in the case of foxtails (Alopecurus species) in horses’ mouths, or lower the value of animal products, such as the sticky tarweeds (Madia species) found in wool. Weeds can also host diseases and insects that harm desirable plants. They can also produce allelopathic chemicals that inhibit the germination of seeds and hamper the growth, survival or reproduction of other plants. This is particularly true in nutrient-poor soils.
Trees
Trees are one of the most important elements of Earth’s biosphere. They store carbon dioxide, provide oxygen and form the basis for much of our biodiversity. They help to improve air quality by intercepting unhealthy particles and absorbing carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants that would otherwise be circulated in the atmosphere.
Their far reaching roots hold soil in place and fight erosion. They conserve water by reducing runoff and sediment deposition after rainstorms. They also absorb and filter rainfall, preserving the integrity of our water supply.
A tree is a woody perennial plant that is tall at maturity, with a single trunk and leaves growing directly from the trunk. The term is used to distinguish it from a shrub, which is typically defined as a perennial woody plant with multiple stems that is shorter than a tree. The trees are represented in three botanical groups: pteridophytes (which include the tree ferns), gymnosperms (including conifers) and angiosperms (flowering plants). The distinction between these is somewhat subjective.
